When behavior raises difficult questions about placement.
Behavioral expertise for complex decisions about safety, discipline, supports, and educational placement.
A behavioral perspective, grounded in disability rights and special education law
When behavioral concerns lead to exclusion from the general education setting, decisions about discipline, support, and placement require both a clear understanding of the student and deep knowledge of the legal framework surrounding those decisions.
Northwoods brings behavioral expertise together with an in-depth understanding of the laws, regulations, and procedural protections that shape educational decision-making for students with disabilities. Consultation focuses on the behavioral information teams need when considering removals, access to general education, and changes in placement—not simply on managing behavior in isolation.
The work connects assessment, intervention, and implementation with careful attention to student rights, meaningful participation, and the supports that may help a student access learning alongside their peers. This is behavioral consultation informed by law, not legal advice or representation.
Where consultation can help
Manifestation determination discussions
Organize and interpret behavior data, assessment findings, educational history, and information about intervention implementation to support the team’s discussion. Consultation contributes behavioral analysis; it does not replace the team’s determination or legal counsel.
Restraint & seclusion concerns
Review patterns surrounding incidents, environmental conditions, prevention strategies, and existing supports. Identify behavioral assessment and intervention needs that can inform safer, less-restrictive approaches.
Repeated discipline & removals
Examine patterns of suspension, classroom removal, or reduced access to instruction. Clarify what behavior may be communicating and where support or implementation needs closer review.
Programming & placement questions
Help teams clarify the student’s behavioral needs, which supports have been tried, and what changes may improve access in the current setting or inform consideration of other options.
Individual adult support
Bring assessment-informed questions to discussions about 1:1 staffing: what support is needed, what it should accomplish, and how participation and independence will be evaluated.
Behavior-plan implementation
Review the gap between a written plan and daily practice. Identify where staff need clarification, coaching, resources, or an individualized revision to the intervention.
Support for informed decisions—not a predetermined outcome
Consultation may include records and data review, observation, interviews, team meetings, assessment, and recommendations for intervention and follow-up. The scope is agreed with the school based on the questions it needs help answering.
The goal is to clarify needs and workable supports, not to advocate for a particular placement before the assessment is complete. No specific placement outcome is guaranteed.
